What are Free Radicals and What Do They Do?

Free radicals are molecules that have lost an electron by interacting with oxygen. In the body, these volatile molecules can significantly disrupt living cells, stealing their electrons and causing oxidative stress. Scientists have linked oxidative stress to numerous and serious adverse health effects, including skin aging, wrinkles and loss of skin suppleness.

Free radical damage actually begins at birth and continues until death. In young people with good repair and replacement mechanisms, the effects are relatively minor. With increasing age the effects of free radical damage become more serious as free radical disruption of cell metabolism contributes to cellular aging.

ANTIOXIDANT RELIEF

Antioxidants help prevent free-radical damage by blocking free-radical molecules from interacting with other molecules, stunting the chain reaction of the process. The good news is that antioxidants are abundant in the human body and the plant world. Antioxidants include ingredients such as vitamins A, C and E, flavonoids, beta carotene, selenium, and zinc.

To raise the level of antioxidants in the body, one can increase the intake of antioxidants in the diet, and use topical applications of the vitamins A, C, E and other antioxidants to increase the defense against free-radical damage.
