Skin Lightening Ingredients

Vitamin-C-FormulaA Stable form of vitamin C that is related to Ascorbic Acid. Unlike pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is lipid (fat) soluble. Some researchers believe this form of vitamin C has greater affinity for skin, as its fatty acid component helps aid penetration and protect the vitamin C component from rapid oxidation. This form of vitamin C has been shown to stimulate healthy collagen production, reduce wrinkle depth, and even skin tone.

The traditional, natural form of Vitamin C, Ascorbic Acid has been a tried and true anti-oxidant used in cosmetics for decades. Being water-soluble, it has been shown to increase collagen production (including dermal collagen), reduce the appearance of skin discolorations, strengthen skin’s barrier response, enhance skin’s repair process, reduce inflammation, and help skin better withstand exposure to sunlight, whether protected by sunscreen or not. The drawbacks are that it can be slightly irritating to those with sensitive skin, and it changes color fairly quickly as it’s exposed to air.

Licorice-RootKojic Acid & Licorice work together to control hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin damage in the skin. Kojic Acid is derived from a fungus and has similar effects as hydroquinone. In addition to skin lightening, it also has anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties, while licorice extract is an antioxidant that has ultra violet (UV) absorbing capabilities. Licorice also has strong tyrosinase-inhibition activity (skin lightening activity) and it is 25 times greater than Kojic Acid and 75 times greater than Ascorbic Acid in decreasing melanin production.

EMBLICAEmblica is a potent antioxidant. Its fruit (Indian Gooseberry) is known for many of its medicinal properties and is a key treatment in Ayurvedic medicine. It is also an extremely efficient skin-lightening agent that is documented as a high safety ingredient for use in skincare products. It lightens the skin through inhibition of Peroxidase/H2O2 which assists in the formation of Melanin. It also inhibits the alpha Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone which is responsible for the production of Melanin. This duality of benefits makes it an excellent ingredient in skincare products. Further, it is clinically proven to increase skin hydration and lipid production, reduce inflammation, improve skin tone, and decrease collagenase, making it an excellent ingredient in anti-aging targeted products.

Lilac-LeafThe lilac has been known throughout history for its medicinal properties; its leaves and fruit, tonic and used to control fever, disease and skin disorders. The extract of the lilac contains the defense molecule verbascoside (also known as acteoside). This highly studied phenylpropanoid functions to protect the plant against physical, environmental and microbial harm. Recent studies have revealed that verbascoside is highly effective in humans as a cellular protectant with great potential as a nutritional supplement and for topical skincare applications.
Expected Benefits: • Anti-Acne • Tyrosinase Inhibitor • Sebum regulating • Collagenase Inhibitor • Anti-Oxidant • Anti-Inflammatory • Anti-Aging

Another breakthrough stem cell ingredient, CIC2 (Sea Fennel) Stem Cells, extracted from sea plants off the Brittany Coast in France. Sea plants, with their roots in the marine original medium have, at the origin, to face the constraints of the terrestrial conditions (dehydration, light, UV). They developed a unique answer in the adaptation to the terrestrial environmental conditions. These stem cells offer a complete anti-aging solution, including these benefits:

  • Lightening of the skin (tyrosinase-inhibitor)
  • Improved skin radiance and tone
  • Skin renewal stimulation

Vitamin A in all its forms (Retinol, Retinyl Palmitate, Retinoic Acid) works as a cell-communicating ingredient, meaning it can tell a skin cell to behave and look like a more normal, younger cell. When you have sun damaged skin this communication is incredibly beneficial because sun damaged skin produces unhealthy, abnormal, and inflexible skin cells.

Retinol is the alcohol form of Vitamin A, which has long been known to be an essential vitamin for healthy skin, and as time passes, researchers are learning more about how it acts on the DNA to promote healthy keratinocytes (the predominant cell type found in the epidermis), and reduction of excessive pigmentation and increased collagen and elastin formation.

* Prescription retinol products such as Renova and Retin-A contain the active ingredient tretinoin. Tretinoin is far more potent than retinol, but comes with higher irritation to the skin.

*Tyrosine: The amino acid that initiates melanin production.
